BYD’s Tesla-Rivalling Humanoid Robot Revealed

Taking global competition in the electric vehicle market to a new level, Chinese automotive giant BYD is preparing to venture into artificial intelligence and robotics. Posts accidentally leaked—and swiftly deleted—on the social media account of the company's "Di Space" experience center in Zhengzhou have brought to light the brand's new humanoid robot project, named "Xiao Di." This development, which has caused a stir on Chinese social media, clearly demonstrates that automakers will directly challenge Tesla’s Optimus project, not only in transportation but also in smart living technologies.

Standing out with its technical specifications, Xiao Di is designed to be approximately 1.60 meters (5 feet 3 inches) tall and weighs 59 kilograms (130 pounds). Offering exceptional flexibility thanks to a total of 31 degrees of freedom across different parts of its body, the robot is also ambitious in its fine motor skills. With hands capable of gripping objects weighing up to 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) with a margin of precision of less than 1 gram, it will offer great convenience in industrial and everyday use. Furthermore, equipped with a 360-degree vision system that can model its surroundings in 3D in real time, the robot can flawlessly perceive human faces, hand gestures, and even lip movements.

Expected to make a strong claim in the smart assistant market with its communication and language processing capabilities, Xiao Di features a multi-modal interaction infrastructure that supports six different Chinese dialects and six foreign languages, enabling real-time translation. Although there has been no official launch date or confirmation from BYD yet, the leak clearly highlights the brand's AI-driven digital transformation strategy. This massive technological evolution in the automotive sector serves as the strongest proof that humanoid robots will play an active role in every aspect of life in the near future, from factories to daily routines.
