The Kalesma Hotel Chapel in Mykonos: Black-and-White Byzantine Iconography by Saint of Athens

Athens-based creative agency Saint of Athens has reimagined traditional colorful Byzantine frescoes in a black-and-white palette for the Chapel of Saint Demetrius at the Kalesma Hotel in Mykonos. Brought to life in collaboration with illustrator Gerasimos Hatzis, the design bridges one of Christian art's oldest traditions with a contemporary visual language and theological framework.

Monochrome Design and Architectural Harmony

Designed by K-Studio, with interiors entrusted to Studio Bonarchi, the chapel carries the traditional architectural lines of the Cyclades islands. Reminiscent of Aegean island chapels with its white exterior, cubic form, and minimalist windows, the interior of the structure boasts a completely different atmosphere.

Curated by Saint of Athens, the project depicts the narrative of the Passion of Christ on the walls using exclusively black and white tones. In contrast to the vibrant colors of traditional Orthodox frescoes, the monochrome approach was chosen to preserve the symbolic ties of religious iconography, with only the gold leaf halos left colored. Furthermore, bold geometric motifs with tribal art influences, integrated into the compositions, create a modern rhythm alongside the flattened spatial language of Byzantine art.
